Endocronology Team The need for the Diabetes Education Prevention and Treatment Service grew out of increasing concern about the number of Aboriginal diabetics, and the fact that many more were unaware that they had the disease or were at very high risk of developing it. Anyone can develop diabetes whatever your nationality or age.
Have you ever been told that you have?
High sugar levels in your blood? Sugar in your urine? If you answered 'Yes' to either question, there's a chance you may have diabetes. Are you overweight? Are you lacking energy? Do you have blurred vision? Are you passing urine more often than usual? Are you more thirsty than usual? Have you had skin irritations or sores that don't heal? Is diabetes in your family? Are you over 40? Have you lost weight unexpectedly?
If you answered 'Yes' to two or more of these questions, you should have a blood glucose test.
Where can you get help? What does the service include? One to one consultation. Culturally appropriate setting. Screening and information to help prevent diabetes. Follow-ups in your own home. Routine sugar, blood and weight checks. Appointments with Specialists. Some transport assistance is available.
