On The Outside program aims to reach Aboriginal males in contact with the Adelaide Remand Centre to enable assessment and follow through on health related matters on the outside to improve continuity of care outcomes, strengthen wellbeing and contribute to reduced contact with the prison system.
The program will work closely with South Australian Prison Health Service staff and Aboriginal Liaison Officers within the Adelaide Remand Centre and a range of community services that provide programs and supports, to maximise health outcomes for the target group. The program is funded to operate over a two year period. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the program in reducing contact with the prison system will be timely given the findings and recommendations of the National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Committee’s paper Bridges and barriers, which addresses Indigenous incarceration and health released on June 24, 2009.
