Women's Healing Group PDF Print E-mail

The Women’s Healing Group provides a safe place for women to build stronger cultural links, to support each other through life’s challenges and to celebrate achievements. The group is always open to new members and runs fortnightly on Tuesdays from 10.30am - 12.30pm at Nunkuwarrin Yunti.

The group gets involved in a range of activities such as: painting, craft, story recording, talking circles, relaxation techniques, going on retreats, learning new skills, writing stories, journal writing, scrapbooks, drumming, dancing….generally having fun together and keeping each other supported.

A significant project that has brought this group together and helped many other people in the community is the digital story making project where two DVDs were produced: Journeys from Heartache to Hope and Journeys 2.  Read more about this wonderful project in the section on digital stories. We hope to record more stories in the future.

Women involved in this group report positive changes in their lives. They experience increased confidence and a stronger identity. Here are some comments from women who have been involved in this group:

“Having women here who are Aboriginal who I respect and who can praise me for doing well, that’s really meaningful.” “It has taken me a long time to connect with my Aboriginality.  I was very shy of other Aboriginal people but through attending the Women’s Group I slowly got used to connecting with Community.”

“It was good to go on the retreat and have a break from day to day stuff and to meet others in the same situation and be able to talk to them about my story - they understood what I was going through because they were going through similar experiences. At first I did not want to go but I was glad I did.”

“For me, being in a group with elders, I like being with their knowledge. Realising our young people, including me, are connected to that really makes you appreciate being Aboriginal.”

Digital Stories Project

The Women’s Healing Group, held fortnightly at Nunkuwarrin Yunti, has recently been involved in a very exciting project: the making of digital stories. Digital stories are like mini movies and run on average for four minutes each. They are very powerful ways of storytelling. Two DVD’s have been produced:

Image “Journeys from Heartache to Hope”
and
“Journeys 2”

These stories are a powerful tribute to the strength of Aboriginal women. They journey through the extraordinary challenges of domestic violence, removal from family, drug addiction and mental illness, loss of children, home, culture and community. In embracing the healing love for their families and through reconnection with culture, each woman’s story is a testament to living life with pride and purpose.

A booklet with support materials has been written to accompany each DVD and contains background information and a guide for audience viewing and debriefing.

“It has definitely deepened my children’s appreciation of my life.”

“My story’s out there now. It’s grown on me the more I’ve watched it. I’m flourishing now, moving along. I know now that lots of people go through this kind of thing. It was hard to tell but it was helpful to do so.”

“I recommend this process to anyone because it encourages you to look at your life and pass on to your children what you want them to know about how you love them.”

“Before making the video I was still very angry, wouldn’t listen and hated everything about my life. I now realise I am not alone and that others have their own stories of heartache to share. There has been a heavy load lifted and I now have peace in my heart.”

“The process helped me enormously. I can be comfortable looking at myself now. I’ve changed my whole perception of myself and my story. I value my story more because other people do. When you share your story, others come up and say how it changed them, you can’t help feeling good about that.”

“Making this story has changed my connection with other women in the group. We are united in this experience. The power of women and our stories is the bond. We are lifting each other up. Our understanding and acceptance of each other and ourselves is growing. Doing it together makes the power stronger. It takes on a life of its own.”

Please note: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that the DVDs contain images and names of people who have passed away.
